Ugandan Parliament Closes Without Considering Anti-Homosexuality Bill

Washington, D.C. — Human Rights First welcomes the news that the current convocation of the Ugandan Parliament today adjourned without adopting the Anti-Homosexuality Bill. Ugandan human rights activists deserve praise for courageously leading an international campaign against this odious bill at great personal risk to themselves. But the problems faced by lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and intersex (LGBTI) individuals in Uganda are far from over. Homosexuality is still criminalized and violence and harassment continue with impunity. “The international community should not scale back its efforts to press Ugandan leaders to prevent and punish violence against LGBTI individuals and work toward human rights protections for all Ugandans.” said Human Rights First’s Paul LeGendre.
