The people of both of these nations may be tired of any type of authoritarian rule, either secular or religious. This means they are open to the idea of many strains of thought existing in a free society.

"Islamist" does not always mean "terrorist" or extreme religious thinking.

The Islamist party in Tunisia wants to keep open beaches and allow for the wearing of bikinis. Also, the drinking of alcohol will not be banned. This Islamist political party is interested in maintaining good relations with European countries and it hopes to bring in tourist money and international business. Tunisia can only do that by remaining political and religiously moderate.
