Last week, Human Rights First and our friends sent Secretary Hillary Clinton a letter urging her to make human rights a priority in U.S.-China diplomacy.

For someone like the self-trained lawyer Chen Guangcheng, your support means a lot. Weeks after his brave escape from the Chinese authorities, Mr. Chen’s family and friends continue to be harassed and threatened by the Chinese government. His nephew is unable to even meet with his own lawyer.

Now safe in New York, Mr. Chen plans to continue his human rights advocacy while studying law and remains committed to challenging repression in China through the legal system.

Help us welcome Chen Guangcheng to the United States by sending him a note of support via the comments section below. We will hand deliver your messages along with a welcome basket.

Mr. Chen’s bravery brought attention to the struggles of lawyers and activists in China and inspired people everywhere.

Hop on our welcome wagon and send Mr. Chen a personal note. Write your message below along with your name, city, and state.

Although I have not yet gained enough courage to fight that fight at the front lines, men and women like you inspire me to take one step closer everyday. God Bless and Keep You.

Glad you and your family are now safely here and able to continue your fight for human rights against an oppressive communist regime. After twenty-seven years in Cuba under the Castros’ tyranny I am familiar with the harsh conditions of the life of ordinary citizens under such a regime and admire your courage for making a stand against the oppression. Welcome to the land of the free!

Welcome. It is unfortunate that you could not have seen the U.S. before Reagan, when it was still a functioning democracy instead of the oligarcho-kleptocracy it has become, particularly in the past 10 years.

  • Jose Ricardo Bondoc

It is truly astounding how a man without sight has demonstrated true vision.

  • George Darling

You’re an inspiration to us who have to overcome seemingly insurmountable difficulties to do what we believe in.

  • David Matsui

Thank you for your bravery and willingness to be an advocate for these oppressed peoples. I hope that your wife and child are doing well. China is a great nation, but still has a lot oppression like many nations. I will continue to listen for any news on you and will keep you in my prayers. Know that I will be thinking of you often and hope that your journey goes well. Also if you happen to see him anytime soon, tell Mr. Gary Locke that Washington says hello and we miss having him here.

    Dear Mr. Cheng,

Welcome to the USA! Like millions of Americans, I watched anxiously your escape from house arrest and later arrival in America. We are so happy that you and your family have survived these past few years and been able to come here to live and study freely. You have fought and continue to fight for the lives and rights of people who cannot fight alone. For this, you are truly a hero and man of honor.

The coming months will sometimes be very difficult as you and your family adapt to life in New York. You have survived so much! I know that you will continue to both survive and thrive now. Please know that there are so many of us who are hoping and praying that you and your family find peace, happiness, kindness and support in your time here.

    With kind regards -

  • Marjorie King

    Dear Mr. Chen,

I closely follow events in China and join others in congratulating you on your harrowing escape from the village in Shandong province. I know that many Chinese people would also support you if they only could learn the complete story. Best wishes to you and your family as you begin your legal studies in the U.S. You will be a key asset to China as the Communist Party leadership changes in the upcoming years.

  • Catherine Janeway

  • Michael B. Rollo

I would like to commend you for your conviction in your beliefs. The history of the brutal and impersonal means that the PRC has used to enforce the one-child policy is appalling.

What is not known outside China is the fact that those in high positions aren’t restricted by the one-child policy and those who have funds to travel to Hong Kong, California, or elsewhere can bear more children. This breeds great resentment among the general Chinese population.

Having said these things, I firmly believe in a woman’s right to choose whether to bear a child or not. I also believe that Chinese population is so dangerously high that the country will suffer long-term environmental effects related to pollution and water shortages without a fairly administered policy that applies to all.

I also find the allowance for two children among those in rural areas or among those who are members of ethnic minorities to be very odd. Documenting this smacks of Nazism. I know of many cases (have lived and worked in China 8 1/2 years) in which a Han is married to someone of another ethnicity and irregularities, inconsistencies, and unfairness occur.

I was heartened to read of a Tiananmen Square activist making a statement to the BBC two days ago in which he stated that the Chinese political system is like an apple rotting from the inside with the outside appearing palatable but inedible nonetheless. I could not agree more. I saw CCTV9 shutdown in Lanzhou the minute that victory in Iraq occurred. I have had three unannounced police visits to my home on Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday evenings at two different addresses. I have had my computer zapped for unknown reasons. I was also harassed and delayed in getting a work visa for unknown reasons in Guangzhou during the summer of 2011. Although I have never been physically harmed, I have been psychologically harmed and as a result I will pray for the dissolution of the PRC until the day that it occurs and until such time as its breakup mirrors that of the former Soviet Union so that communist ideology and support for it can be eradicated from the planet in perpetuity.

  • Nye Ffarrabas

Mr Cheng,You are a welcome addition to these shores. May you, with your courage, tenacity, and vision, be a bold and fearless example to people in this country. Teach us that a democracy does not stand by itself, but must always be re-understood, re-envisioned, and nurtured by its people.

Nobody else is going to do it for us and if we forget this, it will vanish before the forces of greed, corruption, and power politics. Thus is a rogue nation born. Democracy is not something that we ‘have,’ but something that we must DO – to the best of our ability – every day. Help us to understand our duty and to show up even when it is inconvenient and we would rather not!

And PLEASE don’t forget the Tibetan people! I pray for their safety, and for that of your family.

    Dear Mr. Chen,

Welcome to the United States. I am happy for you that you have escaped your situation in China and hope that your life in the US will live up to your hopes.

  • Shambhala W.

    Welcome Guangcheng:

Thank you for doing the good work. I hope you able to build a global alliance of social justice and civil rights thinkers and activists. As you may already have learned, America is also a space of pervasive injustice and oppression. Yet, if we all work together, we can promote justice and change state and civil policies and practices everywhere for everyone, not only for citizens of China and/or the United States.

  • Diana

Welcome Chen, I hope the U.S. treats you well.
Your fighting the good fight, and you have our
support, we admire your dedication and courage.

  • Paul Jordan

    Dear Mr. Chen,

Like many, I am happy that you are now here in the United States. We are a young nation with a founding tradition of liberty, although — as you will find out — not everything is perfect here either. Not only China, but the whole world needs people of your motives, methods and bravery to push, everywhere, at the frontiers of liberty. In your case I hope that this will include becoming an advocate for the liberties of people in Tibet and for the freedom of that country to pursue and sustain its own culture, religion(s) and language. I hope also that your family will be safe and that you will successfully pursue your legal — and English! — studies here, which can provide you with sharper “weapons” and resources in the struggle for the people of China and for all of us.
    Paul Jordan, New Haven, CT

Hail and Well-Met. I am deeply honored to be able to welcome you to the United States. Your work for women’s rights to self-determination and to control of their own bodies is legend in the human rights community. Even here in the U.S. we continue to have the struggles for women’s self-determination; thus your moral courage and leadership are needed as much as ever and will be needed as long as women anywhere are deprived of their human rights. Thank you for everything that you have done for women’s rights and for your bold example to human rights activists everywhere. Hail and farewell.
