2004 Baldwin Award: Highlights

From June 15 to 26, 2004, Human Rights First hosted Amigo Ngonde Funsu, President of the Association Africaine de Défense des Droits de l’Homme (ASADHO), one of the leading human rights organizations in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and recipient of the 2004 Roger M. Baldwin Medal of Liberty Award. During his visit to the United States, Mr. Ngonde spoke with officials, members of the NGO community and concerned citizens at Congress, the United Nations, the Council on Foreign Relations, the Ford Foundation, the Coalition for the International Criminal Court and many other institutions and organizations.

The capstone of Mr. Ngonde’s time in New York and Washington was the award ceremony held at B. Smith’s restaurant in Union Station on June 23. The occasion provided a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the work of ASADHO and other human rights organizations in the Great Lakes Region, and it also allowed Mr. Ngonde to discuss his views on the state of the political transition in the DRC.

Photographs of Mr. Ngonde’s visit and ceremony speeches may be found on this page.
