Development Assistant - Development Department

Human Rights First believes that building respect for human rights and the rule of law will help ensure the dignity to which every individual is entitled and will stem tyranny, extremism, intolerance, and violence.
Human Rights First protects people at risk: refugees who flee persecution, victims of crimes against humanity or other mass human rights violations, victims of discrimination, those whose rights are eroded in the name of national security, and human rights advocates who are targeted for defending the rights of others…Human Rights First works to prevent violations against these groups and to seek justice and accountability for violations against them.
Human Rights First seeks a Development Assistant for its Development Department. She or he will coordinate the general activities of the Development Department and provides administrative support to the Director of Development and team.
Primary responsibilities will include:
Administrative
- Managing the infrastructure of the department. This requires managing administrative and financial paperwork for the Development Department, photocopying, coordinating meetings for the Director of Development and other members of the team (including volunteers and consultants) and other duties which include but are not limited to:
- Maintaining the calendars for the Director of Development and the Development Team.
- Website maintenance and updating.
- Database development and maintenance; program e-mail; faxing and photocopying, mail distribution.
- Coordinating development of e-advocacy capacity;
- Organizing and maintaining electronic and paper files.
- Making travel arrangements and maintaining expense and discretionary budget records for the department
- Providing administrative support for the Director of Development and team.
- Providing Front Desk relief. For a minimum of 1.5 hours per week, greeting visitors to Human Rights First and operating a multi-line switchboard, fielding both external and internal calls. Receipt and routing of packages, faxes, and mail while projecting a friendly, courteous, and efficient image.
- Website Additions and maintenance. Monitoring the Development web pages and ensuring that they are updated, helpful and error free.
Programmatic
- Provides support for gift processing, including facilitating acknowledgements and updating constituent information in Raiser’s Edge.
- Assists in the assembly and delivery of grant proposals and mailings. Maintain development support materials (such as audits, budgets, brochures, board and donor lists, etc).
- Assists with special events.
- Researches prospective donors and prepare briefing memos.
- Additional tasks as assigned.
The ideal candidate will have the following qualifications:
- College degree;
- At least 2 years of administrative experience in a fast-paced (preferably development or marketing) environment calling for self-motivation, direct involvement in operations, the ability to juggle multiple competing tasks and demands, work as part of a team and show independent judgment;
- Strong project management capability and experience;
- Excellent writing, editing, proofreading, and communication skills;
- Advanced-level proficiency and solid, measurable experience in Raiser’s Edge and the following other computer software applications (MS Office XP – especially Internet Explorer, Outlook, MS Word XP. Excel, PowerPoint. CMS, Access);
- Strong organizational, problem-solving, and research skills.
- Diplomacy and humor will prove invaluable;
