Joined Human Rights First in 2007
As the Pennoyer Fellow in the Crimes Against Humanity Program, Nicolas promotes the development of an effective and comprehensive legal framework aimed at preventing, reacting to, and ensuring accountability for serious human rights crimes (crimes against humanity, war crimes, genocide).
Prior to joining Human Rights First, Nicolas spent six years at the International Court of Justice, the main judicial organ of the United Nations in The Hague, where he served first as a Legal Officer in charge of the preparation of cases for the court and subsequently as Special Assistant to then-President of the court, Judge Shi Jiuyong. While there, Nicolas worked on cases raising a wide range of international law issues including the legality of the use of force, the law of occupation, humanitarian law, human rights norms, sovereignty over natural resources, diplomatic immunities and immunities of heads of state, the death penalty, international criminal law, and genocide. As Special Assistant to the President, he participated in a wide range of meetings with U.N. bodies and high officials in New York.
Nicolas is a graduate of the Université Libre de Bruxelles (Belgium) where he earned his law degree (1998), an honors degree in public and private international law (1999), and a masters degree in international law, summa cum laude (2000). He also holds an LLM from New York University (2001). Nicolas has been adjunct-lecturer in the international law program of the Université Libre de Bruxelles. |
