Human Rights Defenders in the Democratic Republic of Congo

On Wednesday April 16, two prominent human rights defenders were arrested in Lubumbashi, Democratic Republic of Congo. The two advocates, Prince Kumwamba Nsapu, Deputy Director of Finance and Administration of the African Association for the Defence of Human Rights (ASADHO/KATANGA), and Gregoire Mulamba Tshisakamba, General Secretary of the Human Rights and Humanitarian Law Center (CHH), have worked closely with Human Rights First.

Human Rights First and other human rights organizations urged the Congolese authorities to intervene in order to ensure the immediate release of these two individuals.

After six days in detention facing charges of “incitement to rebellion,” Mr. Kumwamba Nsapu and Mr. Mulamba Tshisakamba were acquitted by the Democratic Republic of Congo’s Military Court (COM) in Lubumbashi. In its decision, the COM recognized that the actions of the individuals did not incite the military to commit disobedient or disorderly acts. In doing so, the COM made specific reference to new constitutional measures relative to freedom of expression and association.
