Human Rights First Refugee Protection: Domestic and International

Since 1992, the International Refugee Program has had a regional focus on Africa. Ten years later the continent continues to host a staggering three million refugees. We are working closely with local partners in both East Africa and West Africa to advance practical strategies for refugee protection. Our particular focus on security issues across the globe has most recently examined strategies for addressing security concerns in the context of the mass population movements and weak government structures in West and Central Africa. We have also looked at how to address the material needs of refugees, acutely important in impoverished regions hosting refugees in Africa, through a human rights framework. We are attempting to bridge the gap between humanitarianism and human rights approaches to working
with refugees. More»
