Human Rights First Urges Tanzanian Government to Protect Refugees

On February 27, 2003, Human Rights First wrote to the Tanzanian President urging him and his government to continue according protection to Rwandan refugees in that country. The letter follows conclusions of a tripartite meeting between the governments of Tanzania and Rwanda and UNHCR on the repatriation of the remaining 2,600 Rwandan refugees still in Tanzania.

We are concerned at statements attributed to Tanzanian government officials to the effect that refugees who do not return by the end of this period may be forcibly repatriated. We urge that the refugees who express a fear of return be assessed individually and that those with a well-founded fear of persecution be allowed to stay in Tanzania.
