Statement of Michael Posner, Executive
Director of Human Rights First
on Decision
that China will host 2008 Olympics
China getting the Olympics has risks and potential opportunities for human rights. On the plus side, the prospect of tens of thousands of journalists covering the Games will shine a bright light on their practices – and create pressure for change. On the downside, Chinese authorities have in the past cracked down prior to big international events – clearing neighborhoods, throwing people in jail. The IOC must closely monitor official actions both before and during the Games, making sure people's rights are respected, and that journalists have unfettered access to the country.
