PANEL DISCUSSION AND FILM SERIES EXAMINE ASYLUM AND REFUGEES IN U.S.

Sept. 15-16 events hosted by Human Rights First
and the Joseph R. Crowley Program in International Human Rights at Fordham University

Sept. 15

What: "The Refugee Experience in the U.S.: Restoring Fairness to the Asylum Process," a panel discussion on U.S. asylum and detention practices, as well as efforts by human rights activists to protect the rights of refugees.

Who: Panelists include Somali refugee and former I.N.S. detainee Yasmine Mohamed; Will Coley, project director, Jesuit Refugee Service; and Gene Guerrero, director of Human Rights First’s Torchlight Campaign, which seeks to restore rights to refugees. Moderated by WNYC reporter Amy Eddings.

What: "The Refugee Experience: In flight and in the Heart of America," a day of films highlighting the experiences of refugees abroad and in the United States. Noon: "Well Founded Fear" (1999, Shari Robertson & Michael Camerini, The Epidavros Project, Inc.). An intimate view of political asylum in America – who deserves it and who decides. 2:30 p.m.: "Children of Chabannes" (1999, Lisa Gossels & Dean Wetherell, Perennial Pictures, Inc.). The WWII story of French villagers who saved the lives of 400 Jewish refugee children. 4:30 p.m.: "Abandoned: The Betrayal of America’s Immigrants" (1999, David Belle & Nicholas Wrathall, Crowing Rooster Arts, Inc.). An examination of the detention of asylum seekers and other immigrants in the United States.
