Human Rights First Announces Final 2000 Session of
The Preparatory Commission for the International Criminal Court

 

WHAT:           Established at the Rome Conference in July 1998 when 120 countries voted for its creation, the International Criminal Court will be the first permanent, global mechanism for judging the crimes of gravest concern to the world.  To date, 115 countries have signed, and 22 countries have ratified the Rome Statute; the Court will come into effect when 60 countries have ratified.  The sessions of the Preparatory Commission (PrepCom) determine the actual mechanics of how the ICC will operate.

WHO :            Delegates from over 120 countries around the world, and dozens of NGOs under the umbrella
of the Coalition for an  International Criminal Court, with a membership of over 800 NGOs worldwide.
