Oil and mining industries, often operating in regions where armed conflict either exists or is likely to break out, face particular problems protecting the assets they extract. Company-controlled security forces, whether contracted privately or in cooperation with the host government, are infamous for committing egregious human rights abuses including murder and rape.

We are currently working with other non-governmental organizations that are taking the lead on the Voluntary Principles on Security and Human Rights to harmonize standards for security and the right to life in the communities surrounding mines.
