The History of Human Rights First's Work on Refugee Issues

Protecting the human rights of refugees in the U.S. and abroad has been an integral part of the work of Human Rights First since its founding in 1978. We were the first human rights organization in the U.S. to devote substantial energy to promoting the human rights of refugees, and to forge links between the refugee service and human rights communities. Human Rights First has sought to ensure that refugees are protected in the United States both by providing direct representation for asylum seekers and by seeking to influence policy to ensure that all claims decided through fair procedures. We have also sought to protect the rights of refugees around the world by intervening with international actors and national governments to address particular problem areas and to set effective policies for protecting refugees worldwide.
