Sufyian Barhoumi
Sufyian Barhoumi, an Algerian national, was charged with conspiring with members and associates of al Qaeda to commit terrorism, attack civilians and civilian objects, commit murder and destroy property. According to the Defense Department, from 1998 to 2002, he received training in explosives at an al Qaeda training camp in Afghanistan and trained other members of al Qaeda to build remote detonation devices for explosives to be later used in Afghanistan against U.S. forces.
Barhoumi denied a number of these allegations against him in his Combatant Status Review Tribunal, where he testified that he went to Afghanistan not to fight the Americans, but to join the Chechen cause; he denied that he was a member of al-Qaeda. He also mentioned that he had resided in the United Kingdom for two years and that he had attended two training camps.
