As a staff attorney in the Los Angeles office of Human Rights First, Katie Czapanskiy provides support and mentorship to pro bono attorneys in the Los Angeles area who represent asylum seekers at all stages of the immigration process. She also provides direct representation to asylum seekers in ICE detention and in non-detained settings before the immigration court and USCIS.
Prior to joining Human Rights First, Katie was an associate attorney at Lucas & Barba LLP, where she provided removal defense for detained clients with competency concerns as a Qualified Representative under the Franco-Gonzalez class. Katie represented clients in detained and non-detained settings for various forms of humanitarian relief, including criminal concerns. During law school, Katie interned with Catholic Charities of Milwaukee – Legal Services for Immigrants and with Public Counsel’s Immigrants’ Rights Project in Los Angeles. Katie served as a staff editor and then managing editor of the Marquette Benefits & Social Welfare Law Review.
Katie has a bachelor’s degree in Political Science, Philosophy, and Spanish from the University of Nebraska. She received her Juris Doctorate from Marquette University Law School. She is admitted to the state bars of Wisconsin and California. Katie speaks Spanish.
