Marisa Peterson is a Staff Attorney on Human Rights First’s Refugee Representation team. She provides legal services to indigent asylum seekers, and mentors volunteer attorneys in the Houston area as they do the same. In addition to comprehensive representation and mentoring, Marisa works with other, local, non-profits to organize pro se workshops that pair volunteer attorneys with asylum seekers unable to secure legal representation.
Before joining Human Rights First, Marisa was a staff attorney with the Refugee and Immigrant Center for Education and Legal Services (RAICES) in their Corpus Christi office. During her time with RAICES Marisa focused on providing immigration based legal services to survivors of domestic violence and minors who had been the victims of abuse and neglect.
Marisa received her Juris Doctorate from Lewis and Clark Law School in Portland, Oregon where she focused her studies on victims’ rights law and international human rights law. She majored in English Literature during her undergraduate studies, and speaks Spanish and Portuguese.
