Shawn M. Gaylord

Advocacy Counsel

As Advocacy Counsel, Shawn Gaylord leads Human Rights First’s initiative to combat violence against LGBTI people globally.
Prior to joining Human Rights First, Shawn worked for the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN) for eight years, most recently as the Director of Public Policy, focusing on legislative and policy change at the federal, state and local level to make schools safer for all youth, regardless of sexual orientation and gender identity. Shawn previously served as the Deputy Director for the Sexual Minority Youth Assistance League (SMYAL) and as an associate at Harmon, Curran, Spielberg and Eisenberg, LLP.  In addition, Shawn has worked extensively on the intersection of LGBT rights and human rights through his work as a staff member and volunteer for Amnesty International’s OUTFront Program.  
Shawn received his undergraduate degree from the University of Buffalo and a law degree from Georgetown University Law Center.
