Expert Roundtable: The Syria Crisis — Still Unfolding

Date:
August 30, 2018 - 7:00pm to 8:30pm

Presented by Veterans for American Ideals, Human Rights First, and Global Center for Refugee Education and Science (GCRES)

The ongoing conflict in Syria has resulted in the largest refugee crisis since World War II. Although no longer making the front pages, the situation is evolving in newsworthy ways. Two years ago, the European Union and Turkey made a controversial deal aimed at addressing the influx of refugees. In that two years, fundamental aspects of the crisis have changed.

To discuss these changes, and the opportunities and challenges they present, representatives of the Syrian refugee community, experts, and advocates will come together to ask the following questions: How has this deal changed the situation? How can host nations—not just in the United States, or in the West, but globally—contribute to the challenge of absorbing refugees? What is the right formula for governments and NGO’s to cooperate effectively? How have American organizations succeeded (or failed) in integrating refugees?

The evening event will feature Suzanne Akhras Sahloul, Founder of Syrian Community Network (SCN); Ahmad Beetar, Journalist and Founder of KAMA DC; Erol Yayboke, Deputy Director of the Center for Strategic and International Studies; Robert McKenzie, Senior Fellow at New America Muslim Diaspora Initiative; and Bill Frelick, Director of the Refugee Rights Program at Human Rights Watch.
