Human Rights First Applauds the Designation of Temporary Protected Status for Cameroonians in the United States

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Human Rights First welcomes today’s announcement by Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas designating Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for 18 months to Cameroonians living in the United States. Along with many other organizations and Members of Congress, Human Rights First had urged the Biden administration to take this important step in light of the ongoing humanitarian crisis and armed conflicts in Cameroon. The TPS designation will protect an estimated 40,000 Cameroonians in the United States who are at risk of extreme violence, displacement, and death if forced to return to their home country.

Human Rights First applauds the leadership and determined advocacy of the Cameroonian-American community and Black-led organizations and coalitions that ensured this long-overdue designation of TPS for Cameroon.
