Kenosha Verdict Demands Federal Review

WASHINGTON D.C. — With news about today’s verdict in the killing of Joseph Rosenbaum and Anthony Huber, as well as the shooting of Gaige Grosskreutz during racial justice protests in Kenosha, WI, Human Rights First calls on the U.S. Department of Justice to pursue an immediate federal review.

“A white police officer shot a Black man in Kenosha, and people responded with demonstrations for racial justice. Joseph Rosenbaum and Anthony Huber were killed, and Gaige Grosskreutz was injured by someone who elected to cross state lines from Illinois carrying an AR-15-style rifle, ultimately killing two people, injuring a third, and walking past police to safety,” said Michael Breen, President and CEO of Human Rights First. “Today’s news shows that when it comes to race, the United States is a long way from equal justice under law. We need to make sure that every element of society values Black lives as much as white ones. This demands a federal review. As we move forward, we desperately need to address the entrenched institutional racism that allows these types of crimes to go unpunished.”
