Obama Administration Should Push for Release of Journalists, Human Rights Activities

Washington, DC – In response to news reports that scores of journalists and human rights activists are being hunted down and have been detained by the Egyptian authorities, Human Rights First’s Neil Hicks issued the following statement: “These actions mark a new low in the Mubarak regime’s futile attempts to silence the Egyptian people and hide mounting calls for reform from rest of the world. The Obama Administration should call on the Mubarak regime to immediately release journalists and activists that it continues to detain without cause. It should also press the Egyptian authorities to hold accountable anyone who has used violence to stem news coverage of the historic events that are unfolding in Egypt or to disrupt peaceful calls for change.”
