Trump Administration Considers Shutting Down Border, Barring Asylum Seekers

Washington, D.C.—In response to reports that the administration may issue a new rule that could close the southern border and bar Central American asylum seekers traveling in the migrant caravan from entry into the United States, Human Rights First’s President and CEO Mike Breen issued the following statement:

The proposed ban is yet another shameful attempt by this administration to block from the United States the vulnerable men, women, and children who come to this country seeking safety. The Trump Administration clearly believes it is above the law, but this Latino Ban will not hold up in court.

The refugees at our southern border are not a threat, and our nation is more than capable of providing refuge to families who have bravely escaped violence and persecution.

For centuries America has proudly stood as a nation of immigrants. President Trump’s attacks on those seeking protection are a betrayal of our values.
