Human Rights First Applauds Supreme Court Decision Affirming Birthright Citizenship

Washington, D.C. -Today, the Supreme Court affirmed the constitutional guarantee of birthright citizenship to all children born in this country, reinforcing more than 150 years of settled law.

Human Rights First’s Vice President of Refugee and Immigrant Rights Robyn Barnard released the following statement:

"Today the Supreme Court affirmed what the Fourteenth Amendment has guaranteed for more than 150 years: birthright citizenship is not negotiable, and no president can erase it with a stroke of a pen. The Fourteenth Amendment was written to reject a legacy of racist exclusion and guarantee that everyone born in the United States stands equal under the law. Efforts to strip children of that guarantee undermine both the Constitution and the foundations of our democracy. We will continue to stand with those defending the principle that every person born here deserves equal citizenship under the law."
