Through Human Rights First’s Refugee Representation program, volunteer lawyers have the unique opportunity to change the lives of refugees by helping them secure protection in the United States. Our clients, who have fled various forms of persecution, cannot afford counsel and desperately need quality representation to overcome the various barriers to justice they face in the immigration system. Volunteer lawyers have the opportunity to represent individual clients with the mentorship and guidance of experts at Human Rights First.
If you are an attorney interested in taking a pro bono case with Human Rights First, please contact:
New York, NY Office: NYprobono@humanrightsfirst.org
Los Angeles, CA Office: LAprobono@humanrightsfirst.org
Many of our clients do not speak English. Bilingual volunteers help our legal team during phone screenings and intake interviews, and can translate foreign-language documents into English. If you are fluent in English and another language, and you are interested in volunteering with us as an interpreter/translator, please reach out:
New York, NY Office: NYprobono@humanrightsfirst.org
Los Angeles, CA Office: LAprobono@humanrightsfirst.org
Many of our clients have endured torture and other forms of persecution that leave physical and psychological trauma. Volunteer health professionals can help our clients secure protection by providing forensic medical and psychological evaluations to help corroborate their accounts of harm.
If you are a medical or mental health professional who would like to donate your skills to this important cause, please check the Human Rights First Careers page for current openings.

Getting involved can take many forms, from speaking up for others’ rights, to legal and language support, to research, medical, or mental health care for people seeking safety.
